Began as a way to organize the rambling thoughts that bounced around my head as I traveled the country, the impetuous for Number 181 came - as things are known to to - during a night of drinking. Seven years later, after a serious of fits, starts, negligence and passion, I realized that I had the framework for a story. It's grown thanks to the efforts of friends and colleagues, but Number 181 is and always will be a story of the average American pushed to the brink.
The book was released in the fall of 2011 to a smattering of positive reviews and has made its way nationally thanks to a devoted fan in California and the intricate web of endurance race enthusiasts that the author has met. Though there are few distinct connections between the book and the sport, a definite link can be made between the personalities of the book's characters and the determination and mental toughness of endurance athletes
The book's jacket reads as follows -
"Shawn Kidd is a researcher with few hobbies and fewer friends. His life
has reached a crossroad, though. Never one to take risks or assume
responsibilities, Shawn is torn. But, in one night, everything changes.
An
enemy has obtained a seemingly-insignificant, low security list - one
with the names of 181 children on it - designed to find those that
demonstrate the traits that make them ideal recruits for all levels of
American intelligence agencies. The Reaper List.
But, these
children know nothing of politics or war, nothing of their placement on
this list, and nothing of why they are being targeted. But, one by one
and over the course of one tragic night, all will be killed.
All but one.
All but Number 181."
The author touts it as "The Red Badge of Courage for the Bourne generation" and has vowed to donate the net proceeds for the foreseeable future to the Green Beret Foundation, an organization with which he has formed strong connections in 2012. The GBF is a non-profit organization that provides resources to facilitate the special needs of our wounded, ill and injured
and imparts unique support to the Special Forces community in order to
strengthen readiness and uphold Green Beret traditions and values.
